Ruby was rescued from a puppy mill nearly 6 months ago. She's very timid - her progress has been steady, but slow. She typically hides when someone approaches her kennel, but like most puppy mill survivors, she craves human attention. Recently one of our volunteers spent some time with her and provided the following update:
"While at the kennel today I spent most of my time with Ruby. At first she wasn't so willing to have me in her space. So I gave her her space and sat on the other side of her kennel. She finally came within reaching distance. I kept pulling my hand closer to myself but leaving it so she would reach for me. She did. She scooted closer with each withdrawal of my hand. Oh how she loves her ears rubbed. Her eyes began to close and she started to relax a little more. After about a half hour she slowly began to lay down next to me. She let me rub her belly. I was excited but held it in as not to alarm her. I laid down with her and petted her face. I stopped to see her reaction. She nudged my hand as if asking for more."

ReplyDeleteWatching them discover freedom is such a rewarding experience.
The ear rubbing resonates with me. This is how I made a break through with my former mill mama. After spending 10 years as a breeder, she was totally emotionally shutdown. Over the last year, she has made the most amazing transformation. Her days start and end with ear rubbing sessions~ since we started this, she seems eager to seek attention!
ReplyDeletewonderful! You are a kind and generous person. Great job!
